American Heart Association You Go Girl IMG_1842

Back in November I traveled to Chicago to help American Heart Association kick off their latest campaign, #YouGoGirl. I met up with five other influencers and we pledged to make our heart health a priority. We even did a video (watch it here).

Before my doctor’s appointment, if someone would have asked me what a well-woman visit was I would have said it’s when the doctor pokes all around your body, tells you to lay off the chocolate milkshakes and possibly adds some unfortunate news that you kinda saw on the scale days before.

I recently went to get my well-woman visit and realized that my explanation is a little off.

The well-woman visit is all about preventative care. My doctor took my blood pressure, checked my cholesterol, blood sugar and iron levels, and my weight (I’m obese like 99% of America). I found out that my iron is low which explains all the ice I’ve been craving. Thankfully not low enough to be prescribed any type of medicine.

Me in the Doctor’s bathroom because he caught me taking pictures, OOPS!

Here’s what I realized after my visit.

For me, everything comes down to my sucky diet. I need to eat more veggies, less milkshakes (maybe none), lay off the sodas (and the wine) and get out and exercise. I didn’t get a mammogram this visit but as I head into my 40’s (yes I will be 40 this year) it’s time to start those check ups. Thankfully I wasn’t as unhealthy as I thought.

I’m almost ashamed to admit that it’s been years since I last went to the doctors. Like over a decade. But once I got over the anxiety, it was a breeze.

I guess it’s time to put my Crunch gym membership to use.

So now it’s your turn!

You’re entitled to a well-woman visit every year until you’re 65. It’s not that you should stop being a well woman when you’re 65, it’s just that when you’re 65 you’ll have Medicare, and Medicare rules. Hopefully it will act as a reward for being so well for so long! Check out for a list of all the services that are covered under the well-woman visit label and how you can schedule your appointment.

Also if you are around this Thursday…

Be sure to log onto Periscope (subscribe to my channel for updates) at 7pm on Thursday Feb 11th to watch my live coverage of the Red Dress Collection red carpet event during NYFW. I’ll be giving away a prize pack that will include a $100 Macy’s gift card, a Fitbit flex, a Go Red For Women watch, tote, and red dress pin! #YouGoGirl

I had the same sentiments as you not until my doctor made me realize of how important our health is (very cliche yes I know, but so significant!) Visiting the doctor was also ignored, not just by me, but also by my friends. Now i’m on my “assignment” to convince them to do so!
