Tia Mowry says she is one of those celebrities who will always remember a face. But I was still surprised that she recognized me from our last interview (maybe it’s the grey).
The wildly gorgeous and humble actress is the star of The Cooking Channel series Tia Mowry at Home and Nickelodeon’s Instant Mom. She partnered with Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds Lustre as a Brand Ambassador for the day to share her tips and recipes for planning a glamorous Mother’s Day experience.
I got a chance to chat with Tia and she dished her cooking tips for the busy mom, what secrets she’d tell her mother and how being a mom has changed her.
GorgeousInGrey: What are three ways being a mother changed the person you are?
Tia Mowry: I’m a lot more patient. I was kind of like a patient person before, but I’m a lot more patient now. I’ve learned to stop and smell the roses. I mean I remember the first we took my son out. I’ll never forget this. We took him to the beach and it was amazing how he was so in awe of the way the ocean waves sounded when they crashed. He was just so in awe of it and he took it in. I was so used to hearing it, but then he slowed down everything for me and so I started to be like “Oh my God. This is really amazing. This is really beautiful”.
I’ve also become a lioness. Before, I was kind of shy and reserved about asking for what I wanted and you know, I’ve always been a go getter, but he just kind of exacerbated that. It’s like I’ve been attacking my fears more and I think because he’s my motivator.
GIG: Mother’s Day is always bittersweet for me. But before my mother passed I was able to tell her everything I have always wanted to. If you could tell your mom anything in the world, what would you tell her?
Tia: Oh my gosh! I would tell my mom thank you so much for being strong because I admire that about her. Growing up, I never knew how we didn’t have any money. She actually suffered from sarcoidosis and I never really knew how harsh of a disease that it is until I got older. She went through it. She’s fine now and she’s healed, but she’s such a strong woman. Also I want to thank her for putting herself, not last, but putting her kids first because if it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t be here doing what we’re doing. She gave up her job to allow us to pursue our dreams and that takes a lot. I admire her strength. I admire her selflessness. She’s not a selfish person and I want to thank her for turning me into the person that I am today. I am who I am today because of what she’s instilled in me, character, integrity. She was tough at times, but now I know why.
GIG: And those are all characteristics you need to be a busy mom with your schedule and your cooking show. What are some tips for moms that can still slay it and still look gorgeous?
Tia: I take everything a moment at a time. Like I’m leaving New York today to go back to LA, but I don’t even know what time my flight is. I don’t know any of that information so right now my priorities are here and then once I’m done with this then I’ll move on to the next. I don’t overwhelm myself. I take everything a moment at a time. Also you have to learn to forgive yourself. There are some days where you’re going to check everything off that checklist and you’re going to be like “yes” and there are other days when you’re not even going to be half way through that list. So forgive yourself and say “you know what?, that’s okay, I’ll just get it tomorrow”. So take everything a moment at a time, forgive yourself and pamper yourself. I think it’s important to know how to balance yourself so work hard, play hard.
GIG: So for those of us ladies who cannot cook, give us some quick tips on what we need to do in the kitchen to impress our man?
Tia: Number one, focus on very easy recipes so you can start to believe in yourself because if you accomplish something that’s really small you can say “okay, yeah. I can accomplish something else.” So start off with small dishes, salads.
GIG: So could I actually make him peanut butter and jelly? [laughs]
Tia: [laughs] Peanut and jelly is find, but you know what? You can toast the peanut butter and jelly. Maybe you can switch it up and put some Nutella in there. See?! [laughs] Put some Nutella in there. Make it a little fancy, but I just start off with salads. I have this bomb pomegranate kale and tangerine salad. It’s just basically putting the kale together, putting pomegranates on with some tangerines and then you make your own tangerine dressing.
GIG: That’s my kind of cooking.
Tia: Yes, it’s just tangerine juice, olive oil, salt and pepper and you’re done.
Here’s an episode of Tia Mowry At Home, and of course she’s cooking for her man! GO figure.
