My Journey To Embracing My Curves (That I Use To Hate) #PlusIsEqual

Lane Bryant Gorgeous In Grey 6There has never been a moment in my life where I wasn’t plus size. In fact, I was plus size before the world introduced us to the term plus size. As a relatively tall teenager I grew up ashamed of my curves. Partly because I had to shop at the same places my mother did. I have to give myself credit though. Somehow I figured out how to dress up those mom jeans. I even learned a cute way to tie up my plaid shirts so that it would fit tight around my wide waist—just like my skinnier friends. But I never wanted to show off too much of my body. I’ll blame my mother for that.

She would say, “Girl you’ve got a body most women dream of, we’ve got to figure out how to hide all of those curves.” So for the next decade I curated my closet with tomboy attire to hide every fabulous part of my body.

Luckily, the 90’s came and went in the most dramatic way and I finally learned to celebrate my curves. But when I look back, I’m amazed at how far we’ve come. I mean we are out here in way too cute crop tops and ultra sexy bodycons. We’ve reclaimed our bodies from the lonely corner of society’s throwaways and declared war on our enemies (read: anyone who doesn’t support our body positive movement).

Which is why I’ll always love and support plus size pioneer brand, Lane Bryant. I’m sure this is no secret to you guys as I always publicly applauded their efforts in an industry that’s overly opinionated and rapidly growing. Remember their #ImNoAngel campaign? Best. Ever. And it was needed. Something to confirm what we as plus size women already know, we are worthy of celebration, fabulously designed clothes and a few Spanx free days (LOL).

Not only are they a champion in the body positivity movement but their evolution is also admirable. They’ve grown just like I have. We’re come a long way from our mom jeans and plaid shirts. Now we are rocking pleated leather skater skirts, distressed boyfriend jeans and sequin tops that any celebrity (big or small) would swoon for.

Lane Bryant Gorgeous In Grey 4I recently went into Lane Bryant on 34th Street here in New York to shop for my new fall wardrobe. There are so many things I loved but let’s first talk about these jeans. In case you didn’t know, flare jeans are making an epic comeback this season and the fit of these jeans are beyond perfect.

I won’t tell you what the sales guy said my butt looked like but please know it was the ultimate compliment for a cute curvy girl like me. And since I love the contrast of fancy and chill, I paired my look with this loose fitting gold sequins top. I dare you to tell me I don’t look amazing (read: body positivity makes you full of yourself in a good way).

Lane Bryant Gorgeous In Grey 2I also couldn’t resist this leather-like pleated skirt. Before I even tried it on I envisioned so many ways to wear this (#SCORE). Of course I love a great blouse but my all time favorite is a tee shirt that expresses a bit of personality. And the best ways to dress those up are with fancy leather-like pleated skirts! #ShesCute

Lane Bryant Gorgeous In Grey 3I may or may not have left you beauties some trendy pieces at the 34th Street location. I went in you guys.

Anyways, what are you beauties doing this fall to embrace your curves?
