I’ve been blogging/writing professionally for the past two years. And by professionally I mean this is my only source of income and I am not broke. It was always my intention to move to New York and become a writer. I said it. I moved. I’m here!
But not one person warned me about this life. It’s freaking hard! I tried to warn all the new bloggers…”Don’t do it, Gina!” And don’t get me started on my regular friends. They think I’m a celebrity and my life is amazeballs. Which is mostly true, LOL.
I have finally earned the most coveted letter on Instagram! K. Aka 10,000+ followers.It’s like pledging and getting a letterman jacket with your nickname written all over it.
Now that I have arrived I will give away something slightly amazing or we’ll go have drinks together. One of the many questions people ask me, after the typical “how do you start a blog,” is how do you build a social media following.
Well, I don’t have all the answers (sorry Kanye) but let’s start with how to build your following on Instagram.
If you want more people other than your family and friends to follow you, here are a few unwritten rules to Instagram that will increase your following.
“I’m thinking of starting a blog, where should I start?” “What advice would you give to a new blogger?” “Blogger or WordPress?” I get asked questions like this quite often in emails, or I spend a train riding talking with one of my followers that ran into me on the platform. Starting a blog can seem daunting, especially when you see how advanced your favorite bloggers are. But keep in mind every seasoned blogger was at one point in time a “newbie”. So we’ve listed five tips on how to start a blog.
There are tons of amazing WordPress features you aren’t using. Don’t worry, I am guilty too. As a blogger, I am always on the hunt to better my writing skills and use the tools I have to their greatest possibilities.
In March 2011, I switched to WordPress and I haven’t looked back since. Determined and equipped with a ton of saved html bookmarks I finally relaunched my blog. If you blog you know that switching your blogging platform is a HUGE decision. It can be quite a scary and frustrating moment. Sometimes your blog posts are lost, you can’t find a template that you love, or you just don’t have the time to Google those important “how to’s.”
Switching to WordPress was like buying a home in the blogging community and the plugins have been my amenities. I have about 20 plugins (not all activated) and I am still adding more to my favs list.
I seriously laughed out loud and instantly wanted to chime in after reading a post by Beautifully Invisible from a couple weeks ago entitled ‘The 10 things that drive me crazy about your blog.’
I thought it was amazingly witty and quite humorous. But more importantly, absolutely freaking true! Sure every “professional blogger” has posted a “how to” of some sort, but there’s no exact science about how to blog or how to blog without pissing off one of your readers.
