One of the great joys of my job at Hello Beautiful is hosting exclusive events for black women. Last week, we gathered up 200 of the city’s most influential black women in New York for Hello Beautiful andIman Cosmetics‘ “Girls Night Out” event.
I covered the pink carpet, for the second year in a row, and was surrounded by a slew of Black women who just (dare I say it)… freaking ROCK!
BLACK GIRLS ROCK! is dedicated to honoring exceptional women of color around the world who serve as an inspiration within our communities.
Patti Labelle (Living Legend Award), Queen Latifah (Rock Star Award), Mara Brock Akil (Shot Caller Award), Venus Williams (Star Power Award), community organizer Ameena Matthews (Community Activist Award), ground-breaking ballet dancer Misty Copeland (Young, Gifted & Black Award), and children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman (Social Humanitarian) are the distinguished guests of honor that were celebrated at this year’s BLACK GIRLS ROCK! event.
After spending two hours in the cold interviewing and stargazing all the celebrities on the pink carpet, I was anxious to get inside of the theatre to watch the show. I won’t spoil it for you because it was indeed a marvelous event darlings!
I left New Jersey with a sense of purpose, a fearless attitude and I really thought I could sing thanks to Ms. Patti. Her performance was one for the books. I came home, downloaded a few of her songs and I lip-synced for my life in front of my bathroom mirror!
I really hoped you laughed just now. I live for your giggles!
I will be live tweeting during the show on November 3rd, since it’s the day before my BIRTHDAY! *FIST PUMPS & Cartwheels down your computer screen*

Cocktails have always been close to my heart. They solve so many problems. Had a bad day at the office? Well grab yourself a cocktail! Mad at your best friend? Might I suggest having a cocktail! Broke up with your cheating, lying boyfriend? You should totally have several cocktails!
While none of these things happened to me this week, it just goes much smoother when mid-week there’s some libation activity happening in my life.
Last night I took my blogger besties, Christen from DivaAndDorks, on a date (we do this often, helps with productivity)!
We ended up at an exclusive Girls Night Out event filled with glamour, style and of course COCKTAILS.
It was so delish. And as you can see from my Instagram video above, I loved it. It’s smooth, creamy and gosh it’s got this kick that happens at the end of the shot that seems to be filled with nothing but hopes and dreams. I swear it’s great.
Four shots later we ended up at the photo booth throwing up gang signs and making silly faces. Shouldn’t all events have a photo booth, just saying?!
We mingled with the other guests, a hair stylist gave Christen the curls of life, and I got some new lashes! Check out all the fun that was had last night in the photos below (click on any image to start the slideshow).
Over the weekend I had a chance to check out the plus size fashions at Curves Rock Weekend 2013 in Baltimore.
In it’s second year, Curves Rock Weekend was created by Tykesha Reed and Chanell Jones. The two are committed to improving the self-esteem of the curvy community, bringing awareness to healthier lifestyle choices and making styles, trends and fashion that not only caters to the IDEAL size model but also to the woman with CURVES.
I missed the seminars and the Sunday brunch because I could only fit the fashion show into my busy weekend schedule. So I hopped on that stupid a$$ Megabus and I dragged my besties along to check out what was new, hot, and upcoming for us curvy cuties this fall.
The fashion show was four freaking hours. Luckily we were all in stitches as Tionna Smalls and Liris Crosse hosted the show. Still I think if I had of read 7pm-11pm on the ticket before arriving I would have skipped this event.
The runway was filled with fall must-haves from national retailers (Fashion to Figure, Ashley Stewart, and Lane Bryant), to Baltimore-based boutiques shops (Niche Boutique and Real Divas Are Large) to independent designers (Annie Kaufman, Serita Bell, and Shanda Freeman).
I managed to capture a few images in between my excitement (click any image above to start the slideshow) from all of the collections. I am officially over summer and truly ready to trade in my gladiator sandals for a pair of knee-high boots. The one collection that I instantly fell in love with was Shanda Freeman. Her collection is chic, curvy-friendly, and most noticeably SEXY!
Check out a few videos from the collections captured by Curvy CEO.

The expo incorporated workshops on hair care techniques, new products, best ways to style natural hair, meet and greets with some of our favorite bloggers and featured a number of vendors selling products at fantastic prices.
I absolutely loved meeting Krystal, the owner of Black Girl Beauty. Her monthly subscription box is similar to Birchbox, however it caters to black women!
The intimate discussion garnered honest perspectives from both genders surrounding hair and beauty topics. The panelists delighted guest with their witty repertoire about misconceptions of black hair. One of my favorite topics was the length of time a women waits before she starts wrapping her hair at night in a new relationship.
The overwhelming consensus was if the guy is black, he should already know the scarf comes out at night!
We were also treated to a pretty sweet swag bag filled with full size products including Shea Butter Miracle Detangling Shampoo, Olive Miracle Anti-Breakage Formula and Smooth Edges Anti-Frizzy Conditioning Gel.
Over the next few months, African Pride is embarking on an Ultimate Beauty Social National Tour to bring together some of the top beauty and lifestyle influencers in major cities throughout the country.
Each social serves as a platform for transparent conversations from male and female perspectives surrounding hair by facilitating an exclusive and intimate brunch where highly regarded beauty bloggers, media professionals, beauty retailers, and beauty influencers gather together to discuss beauty secrets and techniques.
