There was an ear-piercing gasp when I told the Internet that I had gotten a relaxer and was no longer #TeamNatural. After they all realized that no real crimes had been committed and that just maybe my hair and scalp were just as healthy relaxed, or even healthier than before, people started sliding into my DMs to get all my tips and tricks for caring for relaxed hair. I haven’t been relaxed since high school so I’ve also been curbing some bad habits and adopting some good ones.
Skip a few washes
I know this might be rough for some of you who are used to washing two or three times a week but trust me, your hair will not turn to angel dust if you skip a few washes. Your hair isn’t in its natural state anymore and it no longer needs all that twisting and such that natural hair normally requires in order to be healthy. Typically, I wash my hair with a shampoo and conditioner every 10 days. If I am really diligent I can stretch my wash days to a whole 2 weeks. In between those days, I use a dry shampoo if there is any odor or product buildup. Dry shampoo is also a great refresher for all my gym rats. I also use Head & Shoulders Leave-On Treatment for times when my scalp is going rogue (more on that in a second). Excessive washing also forces you to use more heat. And we all know that more heat causes breakage and damage. Ask your edges!
Monitor the condition of your scalp
You have to take care of your scalp no matter what style your hair is in. We often overlook scalp care but factors like change in temperature, excessive heat from drying and styling, and sweating during a workout can lead to a dry, itchy or flaky scalp. Using too much product too often can also lead to build up that can easily cause the scalp to become irritated and itchy. Many of us think the cause of these scalp issues like itching and flaking is caused by dryness, but they’re actually because of an allergic reaction to the fungus that lives on everyone’s scalp. And the solution is the scalp care active, zinc pyrithione (ZPT). If you’re experiencing these scalp issues, I recommend the Head & Shoulders Clinical Solutions Leave-On Treatment which has ZPT as an ingredient. It’s a spray that can be used out-of-the-shower for fast-acting relief from scalp issues like itching and flaking in between washes.
Don’t overlap the process
You would think that not over processing your hair would be a no-brainer. But impatience has and will lead to disastrous results. Most stylists will recommend 6-8 weeks before your next relaxer. I usually wait 12 weeks. The reason I can stretch my relaxer is because I stick to my routine. I’m only washing it every 2 weeks (or so), I use minimal product and I am faithfully wrapping/tying up my hair every night.
I promise if you create a routine and stick with it, your hair and scalp will thank you!
