Here’s some beauty news that you can file under “Thank goodness”! Angela Bassett is creating a skin care line for women of color. Yes black women like you!
We all know that women of color are deeply underserved by the beauty industry. Most brands offer lackluster colors and hues for us and some offer every bit of nada. Angela Bassett, whose melanin is completely on fleek btw, has decided that we need more. #Agreed
Bassett has teamed up with her good friend, Dr. Barbara Sturm (pictured with her above) to create a line that focuses on issues for melanin-rich skin, including inflammation, hyper pigmentation, and uneven skin tone. The idea originally come to Bassett as she was confiding in Dr. Sturm about her own breakouts and irritations. Dr. Strum’s original line worked really well on Bassett’s skin care problems. So well that Bassett felt a skincare line catering to darker tones was necessary. #True
According to WWD, Bassett’s main goal is for people to pay special attention to their skin “and to see what works best and what ingredients are helpful — and not invasive or irritating. I like them to be pleased when they look in the mirror, to feel good about themselves and the condition of their complexion.”
“There is a difference between brown and black, and in the end it would never lighten. She does not use sunscreen, to my knowledge. And even when I think about this, in the park with the kids in the sun, the dark spots get darker as the skin gets darker. You don’t have the opportunity to lighten and normalize or catch up.” – Angela Bassett
Appropriately titled “Darker Skin Tones by Dr. Barbara Sturm,” the five item line will include a foam cleanser, enzyme cleanser, face cream, 50 ml face cream rich, and a hyaluronic serum. Ranging from $58-$335, the brand is slated for a July release with products being sold exclusively at Harrods in-store and online.
